Montpellier's is a new café and bar that is opening soon in the heart of Manchester's Northern Quarter. The logo emblem is derived from the Château d'eau in the Jardin du Peyrou. This is the highest point of the historic centre of Montpellier (the Ecusson).
As well as creating the logo we also designed and implemented the identity over a range of items. Bar cards are letterpressed in gold on ivory and red GF Smith Plike. A special set are printed onto super thick dark grey Colorplan. Internal/external signage, menus, flyers and a website are all currently in progress. The guys at OWT are busy working on the website as we speak. More stuff to come very soon...Art Direction, Branding, Graphic Design2013 -
New print items for our good friend and letterpress maestro Mr Chrisp. New business cards and coffee coasters. The Chrisp empire is now expanding into foil blocking as well, so he was insistent that we gave the new machine a whirl. Foiled in bronze metallic foil on the fronts and letterpressed in gunmetal on the backs onto heavy duty uncoated board.Branding, Graphic Design, Print Design2013 -
Our second collaboration with performance artist Dani Abulhawa for a piece of hers called "Are You Known To Us?" A follow up of sorts to a previous piece we created for Dani (True Love Waits) this wall mounted A2 poster was designed to accompany a recent live movement performance by Dani at "Tempting Failure 2013" held at The Island in Bristol in April. The poster is again instructional, but more playful and more feminine than the previous piece we created. It helps to clarify Dani's intention with the viewer and works hand in hand with her live performance outside of the gallery space. The palette was deliberately limited to shades of grey which alluded to the dress that Dani wore during the performance itself.Art Direction, Graphic Design, Print Design2013 -
ARTPOST21 is a new creative platform and curatorial office based in London. We were asked to come up with a new identity system and a range of print items. There is also a website on the way too. We recently submitted some design ideas for the "No Fly Posters" project. Basically creatives are asked to respond to the statement "No Fly Posters". Selected designs are then displayed on boarded up windows on an abandoned building in the Ancoats area of Manchester. They really liked our designs, but sadly another piece that was going to be used in one of the later rounds also used a fly swat and had already been submitted, so they weren't able to use them. Gutted!
Oh well, the project is ongoing and is well worth taking a look at or even submitting some designs to.Art Direction, Graphic Design, Print Design2013 -
"DOG-EAR is a magazine. But it’s also a bookmark. It’s completely free, and you’ll find it lurking in independent bookshops and libraries. It’s vaguely about literature, but this is free press as it should be. Submissions are collected and posted online – and once we’ve received about 40 pieces, we make a nifty printed version of the top 9."
Seemed like a great idea so we submitted two designs for Issue 5 based around the idea of the actual function of a physical bookmark. One was a helpful explanation of the bookmark's purpose, the other was a comment on the ongoing print vs digital debate - we don't like Kindle, as you can see. It's crap. Both of our submissions were selected and featured on the DOG-EAR website.
DOG-EAR is a rather spiffing idea and a great ongoing project - you can all have a go at submitting something here. We highly recommend it.Art Direction, Graphic Design, Print Design2013 -

Blimey, this is a bit of a blast from the past, we found this while sorting out our work archive! Front cover typo design and lead article inner page typo construction for the original printed version of Creative Times. This was Issue 6 from way back in 2007. Creative Times now exists purely online. Printed full colour litho onto newsprint with a mixture of standard black and rich black combinations. The only thing we weren't allow to do was change the masthead on the front cover. Oh well, the website one is a lot nicer nowadays!Graphic Design, Print Design, Typography2013 -
Another project designed for the Manchester School Of Art. A redesigned newsprint version of the original Anatomy Of An Institution book, that we were also responsible for. It documents a visual collection of Manchester Metropolitan University staff past and present, all photographed on an authentic Victorian era camera. Numbered editon of x1000.Art Direction, Graphic Design, Print Design2013 -
Identity system for a new start-up production company called Sound Of Science. Sound Of Science will be creating live visual/aural science and music experiences which celebrate the universe in which we find ourselves. Some of the brains behind it were responsible for Polar Live. We were asked to create a logo, image useage guidelines as well as business cards and an initial web landing page.
Business cards were printed full colour litho on both sides and come in a variety of flavours with a mixture of 15 original, inspirational images, that celebrate the universe we live in, on the backs.Branding, Graphic Design, Print Design2013 -
Quad poster designs and openeing title elements for filmmaker Philip Shotton. Phil started his career directing music videos for Factory Records including bands such as The Happy Mondays, and has now gone onto producing and directing for TV and film. He's in the process of finishing a little indie horror flick called "No Place To Hide" so we're designing a range of items for him including quad posters, title sequence elements and website. No release date as of yet...Art Direction, Graphic Design, Motion Graphics2013 -
Bellyfeel has changed quite a bit over the last few years. The company has become more streamlined and also more focused on what they do and what they offer clients in terms of digital and interactive media. So an identity update was long overdue. This involved some minor branding tweaks and a new set of business cards. Cards are letterpressed in black, both sides onto thick silk board.Branding, Graphic Design, Print Design2012 -
Zoe Hitchen is a fashion filmmaker and photographer. After three years working directly with Nick Knight at SHOWstudio she made the leap and went solo to forge a career on her own. She consequently needed a new identity and came to us for help. {Un}titled is her new guise. We designed a new identity system that encompassed a logomark, business cards, letterheads and a new website, which is still an ongoing process. Zoe just needs to find time to sort out her portfolio - she's rather busy! Since going solo she's worked with such people as Dazed And Confused, i-D and The British Fashion Council.Branding, Graphic Design, Print Design2012 -

We were kindly asked by the lovely peeps at The Designers Republic™ to contribute a piece of work for a new print project they were working on. They were producing a book celebrating the fifth birthday of Sheffield based Evolution Print. It also coincided with the 25th birthday of TDR™.
We were asked the question "What does five mean to you?" and were told to respond visually. We were also asked to write 25 words to accompany the visual piece. That was it. Naturally we produced something Star Wars™ related, more specifically referencing Episode 5 in the series and without a doubt the best of all the films The Empire Strikes Back™. Our 25 words were: "Episode V — THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
Easily the best of the series. It's also the one where Vader kills Mr. Bronson from television's Grange Hill."
Our response was featured alongside a host of other contributors such as Erik Spiekermann, Hamish Muir, Jarvis Cocker, Neville Brody, Vaughan Oliver, Vince Frost and lots of others.
Here's what Ian Anderson of TDR™ had to say about A Bunch Of Fives :
"This is a book by The Designers Republic™ for Evolution Print's 5th Birthday full of creative responses, collabs & conversations from friends, fellow travellers & co-conspirators."

We were asked by the guys at OWT Creative to submit a piece of work for the opening exhibition they were curating at new Manchester gallery VAULT. The theme of "From Pet Shops To Porn" was to highlight the changing face of Tib Street, a once bustling street in Manchester's Northern Quarter. Our take on theme was to produce a set of "Tart Cards" (you know the ones you find in telephone boxes in London) with pet themed slogans. Perfect! The gallery space itself is in a basement and has tiled walls which added to the seediness once they were framed and hung.Art Direction, Graphic Design, Typography2012 -

Work for OWT Zine #11 — Error.Art Direction, Graphic Design, Print Design2012 -
We produced two pieces of work for the limited thirteenth and final issue of OWT. The first was a collaboration of sorts with Ian Anderson of The Designers Republic™. Ian wrote the intro, we designed his spreads. The second piece was based around the issue's theme of "Reprocess". Zines were overprinted in two colours on a range of GF Smith Colorplan stocks.
Here's some more info about #13 from the guys at OWT:
"When we started OWT zine we agreed on a run of twelve issues. This is our thirteenth.
Commissioned by the Manchester School of Art and in collaboration with the Graphic Design team, Issue 13: Reprocess follows a different approach to usual. We not only focused on how work can satisfy a theme, but also, how it changes meaning when juxtaposed with a different creative’s work.
Submissions from the OWT back catalogue form a background layer of pre-existing themes, ready to be manipulated and reprocessed by new work. This changes the context and makes new interpretations while initiating serendipitous collaborations. GF Smith Colourplan and six-colour Riso printing help add further variables. No two zines in the run of 150 are the same."Art Direction, Graphic Design, Print Design2012 -

Print For Good is a new initiative producing printed items for sale with profits going to good causes and is kindly sponsored by GF Smith.Art Direction, Branding, Graphic Design2012 -
We were kindly asked by the people at Print For Good to design their second print release so we were more than happy to oblige. Originally designed on a much smaller scale and featured in the OWT fanzine, we developed the design further specifically for this release.
An A1 screen print that will make any print/football/design fan salivate. Each print is individually hand pulled, Man United red on beautiful Mohawk Superfine Ultra White Smooth paper, 270gsm. Yes, beautiful. 'But it's just white paper.' No, it's Mohawk Superfine Ultra White. The release is an edition of x25, hand numbered and signed on the reverse. We have a feeling these will go quick.
"Undoubtedly one of the greatest players to ever grace the turf at the Theatre of Dreams, Cantona was not only a footballer, but a poet and a gentleman both on and off the pitch (just ask Matthew Simmons). We proudly present one of our favourite Cantona quotes in all its glory and one that Loose Collective has always stood and worked by since its inception. This large format version now comes with added player stats! We hope that the big man would approve. Part of the proceeds on sales will go to Cancer Research UK, a charity that is close to our hearts as well as that of our families."
Print For Good is sponsored by GF Smith.Art Direction, Graphic Design, Print Design2012 -
So... we had two design ideas on the go at once for the Print For Good second release and this was sadly the one we opted against when we decided to go for the more uplifting subject of Eric Cantona. After looking at it with fresh eyes after a few weeks though it's actually rather nice so we thought we'd show it anyway.
Designed as an A1 memorial information poster for a very sensitive subject, it deals with the facts and represents them objectively without glamourising what happened. We all remember where we were on that day as events unfolded and this was our attempt to make sure that nobody ever forgets. Proceeds would have gone to the 9/11 Memorial Museum project, a really great project, that you can still donate to here.
Oh well, it may see the light of day for something one day...Art Direction, Graphic Design, Print Design2012 -

Artist, multimedia filmmaker and old chum Dave Griffiths came to us for some opening and end titles for an experimental film he was putting together. The opening type and art direction are reflective of the movie cue-dot subject matter.
About Seer’s:
"An investigator decodes the Universe through fiery entrails of film, recounting a myth of primal origins, worldly corruption and ultimate fate. His shuffling archive of movie cue-dots hovers between stillness and motion, the result of observing and recording barely visible matter on the screen’s margins. Energy escapes these orbital fetishes, displaced from their usual microscopic scale to mix with scenery and bodies. Meanwhile their collector recounts a life of fruitless research.
Seer’s Catalogue marks International Year of Astronomy 2009 by colliding pseudo-cosmology with materialist flicker. This ‘history’ of the cue-dot commemorates the mechanical flux of celluloid, and reflects on our urge to hoard and recombine media relics in intimate acts of collective memory."
Sound design by Ben Gwilliam, voice by Philip Davenport.
Seer’s Catalogue received "Premio Pablo del Amo for Best Editing", at Madrid Experimental Film Week.Art Direction, Graphic Design, Typography2012 -

Mainly as a reaction to awful "I ♥ MCR" campaign that can be seen literally everywhere in the city we collaborated with The Lab and decided to find out why people really did love our great city. We then collated all the quotes onto an A2 infographics map. Screenprinted in magenta and bronze on Factory Yellow Colorplan and strictly limited to x50 copies, it features quotes from people who live and work in Manchester about why they love this city. Many thanks to everyone who contributed something — you know who you are.Graphic Design, Information Architecture, Print Design2012
